Cathy Fergus tells her own story: Cuban doctors "saved me"

It was in January of 2010 while on holidays in Cuba that I became ill with bacterial meningitis. I remember feeling lousy like heat stroke or too much rum. I felt unwell for a few days and on the last day of our holiday I seized on the ride to catch our plane back to Canada. At the airport my husband got a doctor and they immediately put me a respirator and called an ambulance. I remained in a hospital in Cuba for a time until I was stable enough to be medevacked to Ontario.

I truly think the Cuban doctors saved me.

I spent a long time on my own in hospital and basically lost a year of my life. Six years later I still have limitations such as balance, hearing loss and speaking clearly. I also had Cholera and then had a stroke in 2011. That is my story and my name is Cathy Fergus.
